Birthday rant: Don't tell the birthday person what you WERE going to do for their birthday. It only makes YOU look like an asshole and makes the birthday person feel like you don't really care that much for them. It's also annoying and in bad taste.
"I was going to do THIS for you but instead I got you this because I'm selfish and didn't take the time to get you what I know you would really like."
I don't want to sound ungrateful but every year I hear this from one person or another and I'm so sick of it. Just get me whatever you got me and leave it at that or DON'T GET ME ANYTHING. I'm 33 years old, I have a decent job that pays well and I don't have any kids. I can pretty much buy myself whatever I want. Plus, when you get older you really don't care what you get from people you're just glad to be with your family & friends. It's an interesting transition to mature into but you really are left not caring. So, just shut up about your "good intentions".
Also - my grandma wished me a Happy 43rd Birthday on Facebook. On. Facebook. If I was 53 it would have been received warmly but I'm 33. She's lucky she's getting older and easier to forgive.

Seriously somebody pulled that whole "I was going to get you that" thing? The only time that might be acceptable is in the case of, "I had a brilliant idea, I was going to get you that, but I searched tirelessly for weeks and wasn't able to find it." And even then, it's just best left unsaid. Sheesh. Some people's children!
We will never forget the Christmas that friends of ours told us that they had bought us a bottle of Silver Oak (a Cabernet that at the time was very expensive and high quality which we had not tried, but they'd gone on and on about many a time), but that since they didn't see us until a month after Christmas they ended up drinking it. Sorry...
Huh?! Better to not have said anything, because we certainly weren't expecting anything than to make yourself look like a jerk! for ever more...
