Halloween around the pad

This year for Halloween I told myself I was going to decorate no matter what since I didn't do it last year. It never fails that when I make a proclamation like that my intentions will never pull through. I've been down to my parents house (where my halloween decor is boxed up and stored) a million times this month and every time I leave thinking "Oh shit I forgot the boxes!!" Sometimes you gotta just let it go which was pretty hard for me to do being as it is Halloween and all. Gawd!!

I digress.

A few bits around the house that I did manage to get around to. Some you may have seen already. Most of it stays up all year long, honestly.

I am stretching it a bit. You gotta work with what ya got!

P.S. I just thought of the best halloween costume for Frederick. Yeay!

If you didn't know there's a giveaway going on this week and you can enter it by leaving a comment on the original post HERE.

a bit of insomnia

I can’t seem to face up to the facts.
I’m tense and nervous and I... can’t relax.
I can’t sleep, cause my bed’s on fire.
Don’t touch me I’m a real live wire.

Purple Bottle Caps

I woke up Sunday morning in the best mood. It was definitely because of the dream I just had. I have not bee able to stop thinking about it since. I dreamt that I was best friends with the homosexual couple from Modern Family. We hung out in Vegas wherein we slid down a slip and slide off the top of the Luxor and swam in their pool with pink arm floaties. Of course they were pink, although thinking about it now I don't understand why there weren't purple. We drove around California and made of the freaks on Sunset Blvd, good luck would have it that one of them was Tom Cruise. He just smiled that million dollar smile at us as we drove by mocking him. Man, nothing can shake that guy.

Our last stop was at this ran down carnival where there wasn't a carni working in sight. What I remember was walking around the carnival grounds and finding these really cool, shiny, purple bottle caps and picking them up and putting them in my pockets. (I do this in real life, collect bottle caps, and then later the next day I had a thought that I needed to grab those out of my pocket but then I remembered it was a dream and was instantly saddened.) I also remember running around with Cam (you know the chubby gay guy off of the show?) trying to race him up this giant Skee-ball trying to avoid the wholes where the balls usually fall into. I think we were the actual balls in this dream. I was definitely terrified of them. The wholes. I did not want to fall into one because I feared there would be an evil clown awaiting my sudden arrival like a brand new box of red squeaky noses fell from the sky except he wouldn't put me on his nose he would cut my ribs out and play chopsticks with them.

That was a strange tangent.

Moving on, why I woke up so happy was because I made the bestest of friends with Cam. I think I even developed a little crush on him because every time he gave me a hug I felt as if it were the Easter Bunny making all of my problems fade away with every fluffy squeeze. It felt way too good. I woke up smiling and wanting to go back to hanging out with my new girlfriend so we could get pedicures together and gossip about Lindsay Lohan.

Ahh…

It felt way too real and vivid. You ever have those dreams?

Dream side note:

You ever see one of your co-workers at work one morning and think to yourself, I totally had a dream about you last night.

I've never done that.

Last Minute DIY - Horned Owl Feather Mask

Need a last minutes idea for this weekend? No? Okay then move on. No wait, come back I need you!! I NEED YOU DON'T LEAVE ME!!

Phew! That was close!

Now this halloween costume (or partial costume) is definitely more on the cutesy, girly side than the They Will Come Zombie costume I posted a few weeks back. Or if you're like my husband you're thinking how incredibly stupid is. I see all sorts of owl crafts and vintage owl goods in Blog Land so I thought I would contribute to to the hoot - hoot!

I think this would go perfectly with this owl costume!

Or if you just need something to cover up that ugly mug of yours this works for that too.

Want to make one? You could change it up and do any variation really! I thought about putting a beak on mine then opted against it. I almost made a kiddie version too but decided against it. I'm all about thinking up things then shooting them right back down.

I think a white owl version would be really cool!! You could also wear this with a cute brown or teal dress and maybe one of these awesome feather hair clips from my shop...eh?

Oh right, did you want to make one? If so, keep reading...

You may need:

Head Band made from an old tee shirt
Felt
Feathers
Hot Glue
Scissors
Needle & Thread

For the band I cut off the bottom of an old brown tee shirt and fold it in half. It works perfectly as a head band, I've done this a ton and used them for running and what not. If you cut it off and fold it in half it's the perfect width for an average sized head...wait...my head is larger than average so if you have a big head like me it will work perfectly. I can hear Tyrone's voice in my head making all sorts of snide comments right now.

Ha ha, I was doing this in bed while watching SNL. Did you see the I broke my arm skit? It was so funny.

If you don't have a tee shirt to cut up you can use an old head band or elastic to sew into a band. I sewed a few stitches in my tee shirt head band to hold it together.

I took one piece of felt and folded it in half and cut a few inches off of the top. I was left with about a five or six inch square when it was still folded in half. I cut a circle out of it but was very careful not to cut all of the way in order to keep the two circles attached together and then cut out the middle circle. I thought this would look similar to an owl's large round eyes. It kind of does okay?

you could leave it like this. i think i should have

After that I sewed the eyes on to the head band. I just hand stitched it only needed a few stitches. This mask is on the light side so you don't have to worry about it being heavy or falling off. It's made out of feathers and felt for crying out loud, have you ever weighed that shit? I have.

Next up I started glueing the feathers all around the eyes and stuck a few long ones on outside edges to resemble a horned owls horns.

Done!

Don't forget to enter the giveaway if you haven't already. It's one of the posts below this in case you have issues with scrolling down. You never know your wrist could be all sorts of jacked up. In that case then pushing the arrow down on your keyboard works too. I'm here to help.

Behind the Scenes:

This is me telling Tyrone "Just take it from here up! OKAY?" While he's laughing at me. I had to bribe him to get him to take this. I need a fucking tripod!
