Happy V Day + Nightmare Cake Pops

Happy Venereal disease day!

Valentines day. Right. I hate it when I mix those two up.

our wedding cake topper

I'm not going to lie to you. I had a stiff drink before I sat down to write this. Usually I would be asleep after one but not tonight. Something between watching the Grammys and drinking a cocktail after a long day of cleaning is keeping me wide awake.

It's going to be hard for us to top last year's Valentines Day. If you haven't seen the original post you have to go check out what we made for each other. Since I'm all about the DIY it pretty much made my entire year almost and it was amidst a hard time for us so making each other gifts really helped get me through a slump. The card Tyrone made for me I will FOREVER cherish. And that's about as sappy as I'm going to get.

I made the horrible mistake of going to the mall today (the day before Valentines Day) which was a massive fail in it's self. First of all the MALL is ridiculous. If I don't have a specific item in mind that I know ONLY the mall can give me then I try not to go anymore. I didn't think we were doing V-day this year but I think Tyrone got me something and I started succumbing to the pressure of the holiday so I went out to see what I could get him and came back empty handed. I suck. I didn't even think about making anything either. Another FAIL.

Nightmare Valentine Cake Pops

I wanted to make my bloody valentine cookies again this year but after seeing Bakerella's cake pops every where I wanted to try my own spin on them. Jack Nightmare Before Christmas Cake Pops.

i had a bit of trouble with the faces ok

I used her basic recipe but these are the ingredients I used.

1 box red velvet cake mix
1 can cream cheese frosting
1 pkg. of white candy coating
Semi-sweet chocolate chips
bamboo sticks (because I had some leftover from the carmel apple recipe FAIL)
I used a sharpie to draw the stripes on the bamboo sticks

I didn't prepare as well as I should have for this recipe. It requires much more attention than I thought it would. I also couldn't find an edible pen to draw the faces on with so I just used melted chocolate and the end of a chopstick. Ghetto-fab, but it worked. One thing I did know was that I could not pull off doing 40-50 of these guys so I made larger balls and didn't even attempt to keep them standing straight up.

My tip, before you try dipping your balls in the candy coating (hehe) make sure they are more on the frozen side rather than just the firm side so that you don't get any crumbs coming off into the melted candy coating. I did this and it totally pissed me off. Some of my Jack's faces look like they have an acne problem. Red cake against white frosting is tricky. My other tip is to keep the candy coating on a double boiler NOT just keep putting it in the microwave. Mine would not stay melted enough so I left it in the double boiler which worked out so much better.

They actually taste really great. Them and the cocktail are all I had for dinner, it was very wasp-like of me.

Do you love Jack's bloody brains inside? I do.

Doesn't Bakerella make them look a whole hell of a lot easier than they really are? I made cupcake pops and boy, were they a bitch. End result is divine, but it takes some serious effort. Very cute though! I love Jack.

Way better/edgier than Bakerella's! They look delicious!

Also, I love the wedding topper and the card from Tyrone. You guys are the kind of sweet that makes me smile, not puke. <3
